Moss

Do I need to worry if there is moss on my lawn?

Some gardeners may not be bothered by moss, while others may want to find a solution to remove it. Moss grows on your lawn primarily due to environmental stress that weakens grass, allowing moss to fill in the gaps. Key factors include excessive moisture (poor drainage), soil compaction, heavy shade, and low soil pH (acidic). Poor lawn maintenance, such as mowing too low or a lack of nutrients, also promotes growth.

How to manage with Moss

Scarify your lawn—ideally in October or early November when the grass is growing strongly—to remove moss. There are treatments available, but for them to work, all the moss must be removed. We advise you to speak to your local specialist.
