DIRECTIONS FOR USE

SEEDING A NEW LAWN

Preparing the ground

Sow Masterline Grass Seed PM 51 Greenscape from March to early October, watering well when weather is dry.

Prepare the ground by removing perennial weeds stones and rubbish.

Dig the ground over using a rotavator to improve drainage 15 -22cm (6-9inc).

Level the surface, taking care not to remove too much topsoil from any one area.

If your soil is heavy, add a lawn dressing with sand. If your soil is light or sandy, work in plenty of compost to add body and prevent drying out and nutrient loss.

After a week check again the area is firm and level.  Before sowing leave seed bed for a few weeks if possible. Destroy any weeds that emerge.

Rake a general pre-seeding fertiliser 4 or 5 days before sowing the grass seed into the soil. It will stimulate root growth to give your lawn a head start.

Sowing

Sow lawn seed any time from early spring to late autumn.

You need about 35g – 50g of seed for every square metre of lawn.

For an even spread, sow half your seed from left to the right across the plot, and the other half from front to back.

After sowing, rake the seed into the soil.  Depending on weather conditions, young grass will start to appear in 7-14 days.

In dry weather, keep the seedbed permanently moist for the first two to three weeks. Water with a fine spray so you don’t dislodge the seedlings.

Mowing

Mow for the first time when your grass is 5 to 8 cm high. Trim lightly and gradually lower blades to an ideal cutting height of 2.5cm (1in).  Mow weekly or as required but try not to remove more than a third of the growth at any one time.

To maintain a high quality lawn apply lawn fertiliser during damp spring weather in Spring, mid Summer and Autumn.

MAINTAINING YOUR LAWN / OVERSEEDING

Each year some parts of your lawn may die or thin out. By adding Masterline Grass Seed PM 51 Greenscape – a technique known as ‘overseeding’ used by professional groundsmen will bring new life to your lawn.

Overseeding and fertilising once a year gives you a denser, greener, healthier lawn:

Dramatically improves the health and appearance of your lawn – new grass stays green longer during a drought.

Overseeding step by step

Choose a day in spring or autumn when your lawn is dry. Remove any rubbish, then mow the lawn down till you reach a cutting height of 25 to 35 mm.

Rake out with a spring-tine rake to remove and break up layers of dead and matted grass. Raking out dead grass is known as ‘scarifying’.

(i)    If you scarify in the autumn, you’ll stimulate the side shoots and runners that develop at this time of year. If your lawn’s thickly matted, a powered scarifying machine might do a better job.

(ii)    If you do the job in spring, add a mixture of lawn dressing or compost, to promote denser growth and level out any hollows. Lawn dressing encourages air, water, and nutrients to the roots.

You’ll need about 25g per square metre.

For an even distribution, mix the seed in a bucket with a lawn dressing with sand.

Make sure the area is well watered with a fine spray (or choose a day after it has been raining) then scatter your seed liberally across the surface.

Rake and lightly roll the lawn to help the seed sink to the soil.

Water your lawn regularly if dry weather follows. Water with a fine spray to avoid dislodging the new seedlings.
